My friend is desperately sad as he is going through a particularly bad divorce with his wife of five years.  He seems to think I have all the answers yet I have not even been married.  All I can do in this situation is listen and try to be as sympathetic as I can.  A divorce happens for mutual reasons and is only granted on the fact that both parties agree to it, at least that is how divorce in Thailand work anyway.  I have realised that there are many stages to a divorce; the first is anger as my friend was angry that the divorce was happening to start with.  Then he started to reason with his partner, then he tried denial and then finally he had no choice but to accept her wishes. I have not even been married yet let alone be in the position to be divorced but to me I would consider divorce a personal failure on my part but I bet I am alone in this respect, right?  Sure, for a relationship it takes two people to make it work but I am just the kind of person who blames myself even when it is not my fault as maybe I could have tried harder or listened more or done more to make it work.  Divorce in Thailand is commonplace in certain areas as people get married due to circumstances such as the women is pregnant outside of marriage (severely frowned upon in Thailand) or it is a teenage pregnancy (again, severely frowned upon).  But when a divorce in Thailand is decided upon breaking up can still be hard to do for whatever reason. No one ever really wants to think about splitting up but divorce in Thailand is an uncomfortable reality.
