There are plenty of potential issues or pitfalls to do with company registration in Thailand.  Whilst I am not a business owner I do have experience of working for foreign based companies in Thailand who have fallen foul or failed to follow the complete rules involved with company registration in Thailand so please allow me to tell you my story.  The company was a small marketing firm that I had not even heard of and so that did not really bode well to start with, the entire outfit was running out of an office on one of the main streets of Bangkok.  Essentially everything was good and I enjoyed the job and made lots of friends but I knew a few things were amiss based on the fact that I had been employed, with a work permit no less, without having any formal university education.  The (more...)
Did you know that Thailand is actually one of the most successful countries in Asia based on the GDP growth of the past few years?  Any country whose GDP grows shows signs of a healthy, successful and sustainable economy and it also shows that business is open to all and that they encourage foreign trading and foreign companies but those who are looking to register a company in Thailand always need to be aware that they first of all need to have all required funding needed to prove that the company can be ran for a desired period of time and that the company has also been registered by the Department of Business Development. In the previous article (‘Mindfields’) I spoke about the importance of following the protocol and procedures of company registration in Thailand and I gave an example of how, not following it, can have severe consequences or implications.  In the case of me it was tax avoidance.  Under the laws that govern the company registration process in Thailand every business that is approved for operation has to meet a certain list of requirements and criteria.  Essentially this begs the question that can these rules be bent or even broken considering corruption is quite rife in Thailand?  Based on my experience the answer is that the rules can definitely be bent and even broken.  After all, how could the company I was working for get away with tax evasion for so long and how come they did not have (more...)
Sadly I have to admit that I am not in a position yet to be lucky enough to experience marriage in Thailand.  Sure, I’ve read and heard all the horror stories about dowries and how most foreign-Thai marriages end in divorce but to me marriage is still magical. I am not sure why I feel like this but I have from a very young age.  I guess marriage in Thailand to someone you love should be a life lasting bond, this means that you should obviously be very carefully about who you settle down with but at least you can get divorced if things sadly do not work out. My friend is desperately sad as he is going through a particularly bad divorce with his wife of five years.  He seems to think I have all the answers yet I have not even been married.  All I can do in this situation is listen and try to be as sympathetic as I can.  A divorce happens for mutual reasons and is only granted on the fact that both parties agree to it, at least that is how divorce in Thailand work anyway.  I have realised that there are many stages to a divorce; the first is anger as my friend was angry that the divorce was happening to start with.  Then he started to reason with his partner, then he tried denial and then finally he had no choice but to accept her wishes.
